My grandfather was the head of the local Heating plus Air Conditioning dealer. He heard me and my dad talking about heating and cooling things while we were sitting in the living room area of my house. He didn’t think at all that women should ever be working outside of the home, and should just be stay at home wives and mothers. It is his generation I think. Though, the longer he stood there, the more hopeful I was becoming that he was going to change his mind and start talking to me about the HVAC industry. I slowly pulled out the chair by the table while dad and I continued to talk. With moving anything but my hand, I patted the chair to show Grandpa that it was for him to sit down and talk to us. He made his way over and sat down, however he sort of moved away from me. Dad and I were discussing the latest HVAC technology and the new ways of automating Heating and Air Conditioning in commercial buildings and soon in homes. Grandpa huffed and puffed a couple times and then he turned to me. He asked why I wanted to be a Heating plus Air Conditioning repair person and not be enthusiastic to be a spouse and mother. I smiled after he said that, but I told him I was not a Heating and Air Conditioning repairman. I told him I was a Heating and Air Conditioning designer and I was going to take over his Heating and Air Conditioning corporation when he decided it was time to give it all up. He snorted with a bit of derision and then he smiled. “Not over my dead body.” He laughed then. I think grandpa was gonna come around in the end of it all!
